Admitting your family is going through tough times takes bravery. Maddy's friend discovers she and her family barely have any food, and asks her to keep it quiet. The children put together a plan to sneak food to Maddy's house, and that's where the book becomes most relatable to affluent readers. When the children cannot find a way to help Maddy's fmaily, Sofia admits to her mother that she's been trying to take Maddy food. Once the adults have a conversation, we hope that all ends well. The children in my school vividly understand and relate to this story, though the majority are very comfortable. Giving back and helping is in these little people and this book gives us an opportunity to talk about it.
